Flipkart not shutting down it’s website in September, app-only plan postponed

India’s biggest e-commerce platform Flipkart has put a hold on the plan to shut down the website in September. Earlier this year, Flipkart decided to go app only from September. Just to remind you all, Myntra too went app-only this year only after Flipkart acquired it.

The decision to go app-only is delayed because Flipkart still has to assess the effect of this business model on large appliances and furniture. These items contribute a lot to sales of the Flipkart and sellers of these goods are not sure about the impact of the new approach.

The app-only model is not generally liked by people as this would block people from viewing items on a large screen or do a side by side comparison. Another factor would be the people surfing websites in their office machines. This traffic would definitely take a hit if app-only model is implemented.

Although the plan is delayed, it is not cancelled. Flipkart is planning to do it by the end of the year. If facts from Flipkart are considered, approximately 70% of their traffic comes from mobile app only. So it would be interesting to see how this strategy works out for Flipkart.
